TOP-10 Indie Games That Are Long And Tough

Games from independent developers and small studios are becoming more popular than ever. Among the main factors of their popularity is the advancement of the Internet, which greatly simplifies the way to obtain new information, as well as the emergence of a large number of channels where you can not just publish the game but also promote it. And although the quality and duration of indie games have long been on par with games made by large companies, most gamers still believe that indie games are about short gameplay and strange rules. It is not true! In our post, we have collected 10 games developed by indie teams, which are not just tough but also fun! 

#1: Cuphead

Cuphead was one of the most anticipated games in 2017. It was developed by an independent studio founded by two brothers Chad and Jared Moldenhauer — StudioMDHR. The game really distinguishes from other titles with its incredible graphics and animations. Playing Cuphead, you will feel like you’re in an old cartoon made in the 1930s. Initially, it was published only for two platforms: Microsoft Windows and Xbox One but then Cuphead became so popular that developers were forced to make versions for macOS and Nintendo Switch. By the way, for now, Netflix is making an animated series based on the game. 

#2: Hollow Knight

You will need approximately 60 hours to complete Hollow Knight, an action game developed by a small Australian studio Team Cherry. As it always happens in the game industry, the funding for development was gathered on Kickstarter. In Hollow Knight, you will learn the story of a bug knight that hides a lot of secrets. The success of the game was so huge that developers have already started to make a sequel to Hollow Knight. 

#3: Spelunky

Initially, Spelunky was released as freeware for the Microsoft Windows platform by the independent developer Derek Yu in 2008. But then, after four years, it was remade for Xbox One. #4: The Witness

The Witness game development was started by a single man in 2008 — Jonathan Blow. But then he hired a big team of professionals who helped him to finish the game. The Witness has more than 650 puzzles, but you do not need to finish them all to complete the game. Creating this game, Jonathan Blow was inspired by Myst. Here, you also need to explore an open world island which has a lot of different creatures. 

#5: Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley was created by Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone. Here you will follow the story of the protagonist who decided to leave a big city and move to the grandfather's dilapidated farm located in Stardew Valley. Players can perform different activities at the same time, such as crafting foods, collecting resources, planting crops, and so on. 

#6: Limbo

But, according to Gamelength, on average, people re-play Limbo 106 times. If you multiply this number by 3.8, you get 402.8. Are you still surprised to see Limbo on our list?

#7: Firewatch

Firewatch was released by the independent game studio, Campo Santo. It was founded by four developers Sean Vanaman, Jake Rodkin, Nels Anderson, and Olly Moss. Firewatch is the most popular and well-known work. It is played from the first-person perspective and tells the story that happened in the American state of Wyoming at the end of the 1980s. 

#8: Undertale

Approximately, you need around 10 hours to complete the game, not counting replays. It was developed and released by one of the most well-known American independent developers Toby Fox. You assume the role of a child who accidentally falls into the Underground and faces lots of magical and strange things that happen there. 

#9: Bastion

#10: Owlboy

Owlboy is especially notable for its long development: it took about 9 years. But it was worth it! Made in a platform-adventure style, the game has incredible graphics and exciting gameplay. Players will control a fictional creature named Otus who can fly and gather different objects. You will really enjoy playing.
